Tummy Tuck Liposuction: Should You Do It?

Liposuction, or the removal of excess fats from many different parts of the human body, has gained popularity over the years.  It may also be the biggest culprit for people refusing to exercise and watch what they eat.  The liposuction procedure actually began in Rome, Italy in 1974.  Two American surgeons, Giorgio and Arpad Fischer built the foundation for this procedure.

One of the most popular liposuction procedures to date is the tummy tuck or abdominoplasty. Before deciding to go for a tummy tuck liposuction, you need to be aware of its side effects.  Its risks actually include infection, bleeding, healing problems and reaction to anesthesia.  Thus, if you are in good shape but just want to get rid of a few kilos, there may be other non-invasive option for you.   You are an ideal candidate for tummy tuck liposuction if you:

  • Have excess fat in their abdominal area
  • Have excess skin in their abdominal area
  • Have laxity of the abdominal skin
  • Have a bulging abdominal area
  • Are not overweight or only slightly overweight
  • Have not lost large amounts of weight
  • Have never been pregnant
  • Are 35 years old and under

Tummy tuck liposuction is best done on a patient with loosened abdominal skin, widespread stretch marks of weakened muscles in the abdomen.  A tummy tuck liposuction gives one a firmer tummy, but leaves a very visible scar in the abdomen.  Discuss with your surgeon as to where you want your scar to be located.

A tummy tuck liposuction procedure take between one to five hours, depending upon the severity of the patient’s excess fats.  Pain after the procedure can be severe.  Consult your surgeon as to the best means to minimize the pain.  Speak with your surgeon as to the best ways to take care of yourself post-procedure.
