Dieting DON'Ts

Trying out the WRONG Diet

Slimming down ought to be a healthy, gradual process. There are quite a few drastic weight loss procedures out there that are damaging to our health.

Drastic Eating Restrictions | Fasting

Starving yourself may be the fastest way to lose weight. However, it can lead to great health and weight problems in the future. Drastic dieting and cutting large amounts of calories may seem effective initially as it appears to melt off fats because you shed off a couple of pounds or more in a week.

But slimming is always better when it’s gradual. A drastic diet could damage your body physiologically. Furthermore, this type of weight loss is neither permanent nor healthy and there is a very high probability that you would gain back the lost weight nearly as fast as you lost it.

Normally, drastic weight loss is due to the loss of your body’s water and not fat.

Unbalanced Nutritients Consumptions

Fad diets promise quick results but are usually hard to implement and rarely promote healthy, sound and long-term weight loss results. These types of diet require you to consume specific foods exclusively for a period of time; combine certain types of foods; or avoid a certain food group altogether. This may produce weight loss but these could have dangerous side effects and could lead to malnutrition.

Use of Laxatives and Diuretics

Laxatives ruin one’s intestinal activity and faecal elimination. Meanwhile, diuretics stimulate renal activities and increase urine emission. Laxatives and diuretics remove a lot of water from your body and not fats. Laxatives and diuretics are not effective at promoting healthy weight loss. The food that you believe you are actually eliminating when you have a bowel movement has actually been processed by your body. Thus, the calories and nutrients have already been fully absorbed.

Misuse of Diet Drugs

Several diet drugs and supplements over the last decade have been found to be linked to heart problems and other health-related issues. Diet pills have also been associated with a number of deaths. These drugs are available in as prescription drug, over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.

Negative Health Effects

Adopting the wrong slimming method is detrimental to our health. It could lead to the following illnesses:

  1. Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is a disease of the bone which increases the risk of fractures. It occurs mainly to the lack of calcium, vitamin D and bisphosphonates. Drastic dieting may mean eating too few calories and missing out on important bone-preserving nutrients. It was found that women who put themselves on strict diets have a significantly lower bone mineral density and bone mineral content that women who ate healthy meals.
  2. Eating Disorder
Eating Disorder Anorexia and Bulimia are two of the most common eating disorders. These eating disorders come about due to damage to the hypothalamus – the brain’s appetite centre. The most visible symptoms are extreme weight loss in a short timeframe.
  3. Gynaecological Problems
Gynaecological Problems An unbalanced diet and poor nutrition due to excessive and drastic dieting can cause damage to a woman’s ovarian function. As a result, gynaecological problems arise. Gynaecological problems may range from mere dysmenorrhoea and amenorrhea to the more serious fungal/bacterial/viral infections, infertility or cancer.
