Building Muscles

Understanding Different Muscle Types

There are actually two types of voluntary muscle fibers: the slow twitch and fast twitch. Slow twitch fibers contract for longer periods of time although with little force. Meanwhile, fast twitch fibers contract quickly but get tired very easily.

The Slow Twitch Muscle Fibers

The slow twitch fibers are more efficient at using oxygen to generate more fuel for the body for a continuous, extended muscle contraction for over a long time. They can continue on for a long time before they fatigue. Slow twitch fibers are very effective for athletes who run marathons and ride the bicycle for hours.

The Fast Twitch Muscle

Fast twitch fibers use anaerobic metabolism to create fuel at are more effective at generating short bursts of strength or speed. The downside is that they fatigue more quickly. Fast twitch fibers can be very helpful for sprinters who need to quickly generate force.

Exercises to Strengthen Muscles

Exercising helps stimulate the body’s muscles, connective tissue and bone. Various exercises require a predominance of certain muscle fiber utilization.

Aerobic exercises, which rely on the aerobic system use a higher percentage of slow twitch muscle fibers, burn off fats, proteins and carbohydrates for energy and consume large amounts of oxygen.

Anaerobic exercises involve short bursts of high intensity muscle contractions and mostly rely on the use of fast twitch muscle fibers. It uses glucose for fuel, uses very little oxygen, protein and fats and has requires less endurance than aerobic exercise. Some examples of anaerobic exercises are sprinting and weight lifting.
